Scabies is a skin infestation caused by tiny mites that burrow into the skin, leading to intense itching and a rash. Treatment focuses on eliminating the mites and relieving symptoms:
Medicated Creams/Lotions:
Permethrin 5% cream is the most common treatment.
Applied to the whole body (neck down) and left on overnight.
Other options: benzyl benzoate, crotamiton, or sulfur ointment (especially for children or pregnant women).
Oral Medication:
Ivermectin may be prescribed in cases of severe or crusted scabies, or if topical treatments fail.
Treat Close Contacts:
Everyone in the household or close physical contact should be treated—even if they have no symptoms.
Clean Environment:
Wash bedding, clothing, and towels in hot water and dry on high heat.
Items that can’t be washed should be sealed in plastic bags for at least 3 days.
